Patents, invention disclosures, and other innovations flow from detailed observation, lab testing, and careful analysis. The observer present in the lab, collecting and scrutinizing believable data, will always uncover room for improvement. Ideally, the observer is accompanied by those who designed and fabricated the product under test.

Innovation can take the form of identifying cost or schedule improvements, better technical performance that costs less than the value it adds, product simplification, or a new discovery worthy of a patent.
